To say that Darling is the Nordic version of Black Swan (2010) would be simultaneously accurate and genteel. Narratively, there are a lot of parallels. Diva ballerina ‘Darling’ (Danica Curcic) gets the lead role in an upcoming production. Ambition reveals the utterly cut-throat nature of this dance industry. The incredibly intense instructor gets a little sexually-manipulative. The ballerina gradually, tragically and terrifyingly falls apart psychologically. If you enjoyed Black Swan then you’ll love this.
But there’s a little more to it – the prima ballerina has hidden a hip injury, but after collapsing in rehearsal a new replacement is appointed. Rivalry is everywhere – between Darling and the newbie Polly (Astrid Grarup Elbo); between the instructor Frans (Vikings heartthrob Gustaf Skarsgård) and his wife, Darling – and between hopeful Frans and ageing company director Kristian.
This film, although spelling the same message about the ballet industry, reminds us of its ferocity and mercilessness through a deeper experience. This film is the definition of raw. Complete with ruthless physical training scenes, beautiful dance sections and a quiet, pervading sense of agitation, Darling will stun you.
