The Quiet, directed by Radheya Jegatheva, explores the mind of an astronaut that is trapped within the silence of space. This results in him telling the story of him and his brother, but not all is as it seems.
Jegatheva uses animations to express the imaginative mind that the astronaut has while floating up in space reflecting on his life. The hand-drawn 2D style brings a more personal feel to the film because the movement of each stroke is organic and flows within the space of the screen. The blending between footage from space to the hand-drawn animation gives a more personal feel to the film because we are able to see a visualisation of what the astronaut is thinking and seeing through his eyes.
Sound plays a major part in this film. It drives the story, creating an immersive experience and luring the audience into the story. In suspenseful parts, the sound builds up, becoming louder and more intense, but then instantly stops, leaving the audience to face their own thoughts on the subjects in The Quiet. Jagatheva uses everyday sound effects that are recreated to represent different actions in space enhancing the astronaut’s connection to his home.
The Quiet is a beautiful simplistic film that engages audiences through its thought-provoking storyline and beautiful animations. The film is extremely unique and fascinating to watch so we would highly recommend it.
